How to record a Google Meet call (and where the recording goes)
Last reviewed: By Cluesfinders Editorial Team
Recording a Google Meet is useful — for people who missed the session, for notes, or for a replay you can share later. But recording is not available on every account, and the file lands in a specific place. Here is how it works, who can do it, and what to know about the limits.
Who can record a Google Meet
Built-in recording is not available on free personal Google accounts. It requires an eligible plan and permission from the account administrator.
- Eligible plans include Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise editions, Education Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Google One subscribers with 2 TB or more of storage.
- The meeting host can record; a participant can only record if the host has recording permission.
- An administrator has to have recording enabled for the organization.
How to record a meeting, step by step
Recording is available on a computer and on Android, not on all mobile setups. On a computer:
- Start or join the meeting.
- Open the Activities panel (or the three-dot menu) and choose Recording.
- Select Start recording and confirm.
- When you are done, open the same menu and choose Stop recording — it also stops automatically when everyone leaves.
- The recording is then processed and saved, which can take a little while for longer sessions.
Where Google Meet recordings are saved
Recordings are saved to the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in a folder named "Meet Recordings". A link is also emailed to the organizer and to whoever started the recording, and added to the Calendar event if the meeting was scheduled there.
Because the file lives in the organizer's Drive, that person controls who can view or download it — worth remembering if someone else needs access.
Limits and things to watch
- A single recording can run up to 8 hours before it stops automatically.
- You need available Drive storage; if the account is full, the recording can fail.
- Recording works on a computer and on Android, not on every device.
- Free personal accounts cannot use built-in recording — a screen recorder is the usual workaround, though it captures a plain video with no chat or captions.
How to record Google Meet on a free account
Because built-in recording is not included with free personal accounts, people on the free plan use a screen recorder instead. There are two common routes:
- A screen recorder on your computer: the one built into your operating system, or a reputable recording app.
- A third-party Chrome extension that records the Meet tab. These are not made by Google, so review the permissions they ask for before installing one.
- Either way, run a short test first and check that it captures the other people's audio, not just your microphone.
- Tell everyone you are recording. A screen recorder does not trigger Meet's recording notice, and recording-consent laws vary by state and country.
From a Drive file to a branded replay
A recording in Drive is fine for internal notes. But if you want to share the session with clients or an audience, a plain file link is not a great experience — and it carries Google's identity, not yours.
Turning the recording into a branded replay page — one that looks like your business and sits alongside your other content — makes it far more useful as a marketing and follow-up asset.

Turn a recording into a branded replay
A raw file in Drive is fine for notes, but if you want to share a session with an audience, a branded replay works better. See how to record a session and share replays under your own brand.

Frequently asked questions
Can you record a Google Meet for free?
Google Meet's built-in recording is not included with free personal accounts — it needs an eligible Workspace or Google One plan. On a free account, people usually use a separate screen recorder instead.
Where do Google Meet recordings go?
They are saved to the meeting organizer's Google Drive in a "Meet Recordings" folder, and a link is emailed to the organizer and to whoever started the recording.
How long can a Google Meet recording be?
A recording can run up to 8 hours, after which it stops automatically. You also need enough free space in the organizer's Drive for it to save.
Can participants tell when a Google Meet is being recorded?
Yes, when you use the built-in recording. Everyone in the meeting is notified when it starts and stops. Outside screen recorders do not trigger that notice, which is why you should announce them yourself.
Is there a Chrome extension to record Google Meet?
Yes, several third-party extensions in the Chrome Web Store record Meet calls. They are not made by Google, so check the permissions and reviews before installing one, and tell participants you are recording.
How do I record a Google Meet call on my phone?
Built-in recording is designed around the computer version of Meet, so start important recordings from a computer when you can. On a phone, your device's screen recorder is the fallback, as long as everyone knows you are recording.
